How to split a bill with tip
The math is simple, but it's easy to fumble at the table. Add the tip to the bill to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people:
Worked example: A $60 bill with a 20% tip is $12 in tip and a $72 total. Split three ways, that's $24 each. Turn on “round up” and everyone pays $24 even, leaving a couple of dollars of cushion on the tip.
A note on tax: you only really need to tip on the pre-tax bill, since sales tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is common and only costs a few cents more, so do whichever is easier.

In the U.S., 18–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for good sit-down service, 15% for adequate service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. For counter service, takeout and coffee, tipping is optional and usually smaller (0–15%).
Do you tip on the total before or after tax?

Use an itemized split instead of dividing evenly. Each person pays for what they ordered plus the tip on their own items, so someone who had a $14 cocktail pays the tip on it too rather than having everyone subsidize it.
